Why I'm Scared to Wash My Laundry
Updated: Nov 4, 2022
I recently learned that over 24 trillion pieces of microplastics are in our oceans. And anyone who wears synthetic clothing most likely has no idea they're contributing to the problem. That's because synthetic blends bleed microplastics into the washer with each cycle. And from the washer, they end up in the ocean.
First, because 24 trillion is a large number and it only applies to our oceans. Not our streams, rivers, lakes and ponds.
Two, because what lives in our oceans? Fish, of course. I don't know about you, but I like seafood. And I don't even want to know what I've been ingesting all this time.
But what can we do?
Take the crucial first step in doing something about it. Anything. Because the worst thing we can do is nothing. We may be from different cities, states, or countries, but we all share the same home. That's a fact.
This year, I took a step by partnering up with SaltyLama. They make eco-friendly laundry detergent strips. Listeners of the podcast may have heard me talking about how using them means saying goodbye to harsh chemicals. And it also means using less plastic. An estimated one billion jugs sit in our landfills right now and using SaltyLama helps to chip away at the problem.
